Like Water for Chocolate is packed full of romantic drama set in a forgotten Mexico. When a younger sister falls in love before her older sibling is married, tradition dictates the elder sibling must marry the man and all three live together. So the man marries her sister to be near her. Their lives go on and there’s lots of magic involved, in her cooking and all around. This is a funny and deeply touching movie about life’s anguish and passions.
The structuring of Like Water for Chocolate as “A movie in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies,” as it is subtitled, establishes the filter through which the audience will experience the world of the movie. Like Tita–whose knowledge of life is “based on the kitchen”– the audience must explore the work through the role and power of food, guided by the recipes that begin each scene.
Like Water for Chocolate is a collection of some amazing recipes and Christmas Roll is one of them. This is a perfect choice as Christmas is approaching soon.
- 1 can sardines (small, oily fish)
- 1/2 chorizo sausage
- 1 onion
- 1 can chiles serranos (type of chili pepper)
- 10 hard rolls
Chop onions fine. Fry the sausage over low heat so that it cooks thoroughly without getting too brown. When done, remove from heat and add the sardines, which have been deboned ahead of time. Any black spots on the skins must be scraped off with a knife. Combine the onions, chopped chiles and the ground oregano with the sardines. Let the mixture stand before filling the hard rolls.
Your delicious Roll is ready!
