Sleeper: Healthy chocolate mousse

Sleeper is the most visual of Woody Allen’s earlier films, and demonstrated a more pronounced rapport between Allen and his off- and onscreen leading lady Diane Keaton than had previously existed.

Miles Monroe (Woody Allen), the proprietor of the Happy Carrot Health Food Restaurant in Greenwich Village, goes into the hospital for a routine ulcer operation and wakes up 200 years later in a totalitarian society where he is considered a dangerous subversive. Miles’ sister requests permission to cryogenically freeze her brother’s body. After 200 years, Miles is unwrapped by a group of scientists and awakens to a “brave new world” of deadening conformity, ruled with an iron fist by a never-seen leader. Miles is forced to flee for his life when the scientists — actually a group of revolutionary activists — are overpowered by the leader’s police. He eludes the cops by pretending to be an android, and in this guise is sent to work at the home of Luna (Diane Keaton), a composer of greeting cards who thinks that the world of the future is perfect as it stands.

Sleeper has amazing and hilarious food scenes like Miles slipping on a giant banana or battling a giant chocolate mousse, and funny pot shots at MacDonald’s, Richard M. Nixon, and Norman Mailer.

As this movie is all about healthy food, let’s check out the recipe of healthy chocolate mousse:

  • 2 medium ripe avocados
  • 1/3 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup of honey, raw agave nectar or other sweetener of choice
  • 1/2 cup of coconut milk or almond milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • dark chocolate for garnish

  1. In a blender or food processor, blend avocados until smooth.  Add remaining ingredients except for the dark chocolate and mix.  Scoop onto bowl and chill for at least half hour.
  2.  If you wish, you can also top it with some coconut whip
  3.  Garnish with dark chocolate, some berries and enjoy this guiltless pleasure

You will not notice the taste of the avocado, but the smooth and creamy texture of this dessert will make you want to make it over and over again.

Bolt – Buttermilk Waffles

With his heat vision, unbelievable strength and super bark, Bolt is a heroic dog that can take down any challenge to save his beloved human, Penny. Battling the evil green-eyed man and his cohort of fierce felines, he will go to any odds to make sure his Penny is safe. What Bolt doesn’t know, however, is that he is the main character in a popular television show. When a dramatic cliffhanger has his precious Penny being captured by the man with the green eye, Bolt embarks on a mission to bring her back.

His valiant attempt lands him in trouble though. Unaware that he has entered the real world where he is no longer a super dog with incredible powers, he gets shipped far from his Los Angeles home to the gritty streets of New York. When his powers fail him, he concludes that the dastardly styrofoam pieces have weakened him. His determination is still unwavering. He tracks down an alley cat names Mittens, an assumed accomplice of the green-eyed man. Mittens is terribly resistant, but after discovering the Bolt resides in Hollywood, she grabs the nearest map, one all the Waffle World’s from the east to west coast, and points him in the direction of his home. Bolt then takes her hostage as they track down Penny.

They catch a ride out west and gain another companion; a hamster named Rhino. Rhino, Bolt’s biggest fan, petitions to join their team and Bolt accepts. Shortly after, Rhino absently informs Mittens that he’s seen Bolt’s powers on the “magic box” that humans watch. Mittens tries to convince Bolt that he is not a super dog, but he refuses to believe her. He still has Penny to save, and he must keep his will strong if he ever wishes to see her again.

As the trio get closer to Los Angeles, Bolt finally realizes that he is not a super dog. Seemingly defeated, Rhino draws back Bolt’s determined spirit and he is off once again to find Penny. However, Mittens has cast doubt in his mind that Penny is just an actress and does not really love Bolt. Only when he sees Penny with another dog resembling himself does he accept this fact. Penny still misses Bolt deeply though, and when she is in real danger, Bolt must put aside his grief and rescue her or risk never seeing her again.

The Family Stone – Ambrosia Fruit Salad

When Everett Stone brings Meredith home for Christmas, it’s obvious from the get-go that his family doesn’t approve. Unlike the Stones, Meredith is uptight, rigid and always seems to say the wrong thing. But Everett is planning on asking for his grandmother’s wedding ring, a family heirloom that his mother promised him years ago.

The Family Stone

Introductions start off rocky as Meredith awkwardly shakes hands with Everett’s parents and six siblings. It doesn’t help that Amy, Everett’s condescending sister, told the family how awful Meredith was before she even got there.

One humiliating affair after another, the Stone’s never warm up to Meredith’s presence so she books a room at the nearest inn. She even calls her sister, Julie, for support, who takes the next bus to New York.

The Stones take an immediate liking to Julie, maybe even too much of a liking by Everett. But the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as Everett’s stoner brother, Ben, is convinced that Meredith and his brother aren’t in love, and a drunken night out leads to something more.

  • 1 Pineapple
  • 2 Fuji Apples
  • 2 Green Pears
  • 3 Oranges
  • 6 Strawberries
  • ½ C Light Sour Cream
  • 1 Tablespoon of powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Juice

  1. Peel the Pineapple by slicing the bottom and top off; shave off the skin as clean as you can. Cut around the core of the Pineapple until you have 4 long blocks of fruit. Square off the rest of the fruit by slicing the tops and bottoms of each. They should resemble a block shape. Slice off segments of each, about a ½ inch in thickness. Be sure to remove the seeds and any non-ripe areas just by cutting away those areas. Slice the remainder of the slices into strips, following the ½ inch thickness. Cut and cube the fruit till they are all pretty symmetrical.
  2. Place all the fruit except the strawberries into a bowl with the Sour Cream, Sugar and Lemon Juice. Toss until well coated. Cover and let sit in the fridge as you prepare the Strawberries.
  3. Cut the stems off the Strawberries, slice as you did the other fruit into sheets then into strips. Cube into small pieces.
  4. Dish out and enjoy the Ambrosia, being sure to sprinkle the strawberry bits on top for color and some extra sweetness! Add a mint leaf for love and share with your loved ones.

One Fine Day – Chocolate Sundae

“Take your Child to Work Day” isn’t exactly what Jack Taylor and Melanie Parker had in mind when they woke up in the morning. But when Maggie and Sammy miss their school field trip, it’s up to their parents to get through the day smoothly. With Maggie’s tendency to wander and Sammy’s strange desire to put objects up his nose, babysitting in busy New York City won’t be easy.

One Fine Day

Melanie is a single mother and working architect. Jack is a semi-famous newspaper columnist struggling for a liable story. Both divorced and working full-time, they will somehow have to divide up the day by taking turns watching the kids. Despite their efforts to keep Maggie and Sammy’s presence on the down low, it’s one catastrophe after another, putting a major damper on their day—and possibly careers.

Throughout the day Jack and Melanie project their negative stereotypes of ex-spouses on each other, Melanie’s ex-husband being a drummer in a touring rock band and Jack’s ex-wife an uptight control freak. But no matter how much they try to hate each other, even their 6-year-old children can see what’s really going on.

If there’s one thing to take away from this movie, it’s how awesome their chocolate sundaes look when Melanie takes the youngsters out for an afternoon snack. Good for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it’s a frozen chocolate explosion.

Black Swan – Vanilla Cake with Strawberry Frosting

In Darren Aronofsky’s latest psychological thriller, and perhaps his best film to date, Natalie Portman stars as Nina Sayers, the uptight ballerina whose perfectionism serves as her biggest flaw.

Black Swan is this year’s feature show for a prestigious ballet company in New York City. But instead of having two separate ballerinas to dance the parts of the black and white swan, one dancer will have the privilege, and challenge, of portraying both.

Black Swan

Although Nina’s dancing is flawless, company director, Thomas Leroy, can only see her as the white swan. Her moves are perfect, yet rigid, and to accurately portray the black swan, Nina will really have to have to lose herself.

With a face full of makeup, Nina approaches her director and asks for the part. At first he declines, admitting he has already cast another dancer, but Nina shows him a daring side of her that changes his mind.

In the midst of preparing for the big production, a new dancer has joined the company. Her name: Lily. Her dancing: mesmerizing, as if she isn’t even trying–and it’s no secret that what Nina is lacking for the black swan, Lily makes up for.

Watch as this suspenseful thriller illustrates the intense pressures of being a professional ballerina (both actresses dropped nearly 20 pounds for the film!), and as Nina loses herself–literally, becoming what she never thought possible.
